ASSIGNMENT #1 

Overview - Read the pages on growth and development in "An Adult Sized Guide to Child Sized Environments". Read over the codes in the licensing regulations WAC's.


To Do:


A. In your workbook look over the pages on growth and development for each of the 3 age groups. You may also want to look up the growth & development section in the “Adult sized guide to Child sized Environments” and review the program, activities, & routines, section of the "School-Age companion guide".


B. For your first assignment list out at least 5 key points for each of the 3 School-age age groups. List 20 behaviors that are typical for school-age children. List 15 activities appropriate to the school-age level. State 5 ways in which you could honor cultural diversity in a school-age setting.

 

Take some time to "surf" through the listed web sites on  the "Study links" page. There is a great deal of information on brain research, growth & stages.

A. From your workbook read the Understanding Diversity and the Resist Bias pages and then answer the three questions on your own cultural background. Write a few thoughtful statements for each question.


B. For additional information please go to the “Study links” and visit the websites on brain development. There  are sections on developmental stages and brain development that can be very helpful reading.


C. Enter your answers on the STARS workbook handout #5. Explain how you can nurture each of these eight different intelligences.

ASSIGNMENT #3

Overview - Child centered interest areas are essential for a quality school-age program.

 

To Do:

A. Read carefully the  STARS training handout #6. Work at your own pace.

 

B. For each of the 10 stated interest areas list and explain an activity that could be initiated within that area. Write up your list of these 10 different activities.

 

C. For each of the 10 interest areas stated above in part B; list one way in which cultural awareness projects could be added to that area.

 

D. Look at your own child care facility and identify one thing that you would like to add or change, and explain why.

ASSIGNMENT #4

Overview:  Understand observation techniques. Understand the effects of environment on learning. - Read over the pages on observing children in "An Adult Sized Guide to Child Sized Environment". Review DSHS licensing codes #22-733. Closely read the pages in the STARS workbook STARS handouts #7, #8, & #9.


To Do:


A. Respond in your own words how you, as a teacher, would set up new or different activities for each of these six children from handout #8. Keep in mind what the handout has listed as being observed.


B. Read over handout #9 from the STARS workbook. From this scenario, create a "help/harm" list. Write up 5 things that might help a child's learning. And 5 things that you feel may harm a child's learning.


C. Take some time to "surf" through the listed web resources at the "Study links" page. There are many activities in all interest areas for you to read over and develop into class lessons.

ASSIGNMENT #5
 

Overview: - By using observation techniques you will understand how to plan activities.  At a local school or school-age child care facility make arrangements to visit. Tour the school/center and take notes. Please speak with the teacher and the also the director/principal. Ask any questions you would like to know about their program, policies, procedures, and typical daily schedule. Be very observant of the facility, the teaching methods, and the programs available in your area.


To Do:

A. Allow at least 10 minutes for an observation of one child at the school/center. Record everything you see and hear. Taking notes on the activity and the child's responses.

 

B. Review your observation notes and for assignment #5 list the school or center you visited. State at least 3 ways in which these observation notes could help you if you were dealing with that child on a regular basis.

 

C. Now, List out at least three things you really liked about this facility.

Overview: Learn communication skills to promote positive communication between children, parents, & staff.  Using handouts #10 & #11 from the STARS workbook. Read over the "PURR" active listening outline.

 To Do:


A. Please change the 8 statements on handout #11. Using the best possible positive responses restate all eight.

 

B. From handout #12 in the STARS workbook choose 5 scenarios and write out how you would respond (in a positive manner) to each one.

 

C. In your workbook read over and check off the boxes on handout #13. Using your present work situation as the basis for your marks.

 

D. Next come up with 2 key areas that you would like to improve on. Write a short plan or summary about these improvements.



E. Try to find time to Practice your communication skills at work.

Overview: Discipline techniques should be age appropriate and create positive behaviors in group settings.  Read over the pages on guidance and behavior in "An Adult Sized Guide to a Child Sized Environment". Also read the same section in the School-age companion guide. Read STARS workbook Handout #15 pages 1-3.


To Do:


A. In your workbook complete handout #16 study sheet answer all 10 questions.

 

B. The optional Bingo game is a great review tool that can be used in a staff meeting if you would like.

ASSIGNMENT #8
Overview: Understand factors that influence a child's behavior and developing strategies to work with challenging behaviors. Read over the behavior management information in "An Adult sized Guide to a Child Sized Environment".

In your workbook, do STARS handout #17, complete this checklist according to your present facility. Read handout #18. 

To Do:


A. Read handouts #19 & #20, write up what your response to "Bridgette's Scenario" & to "Jamie's Scenario" would be and then answer the 4 questions from handout #20.

 

B. Read over the Maslow's Hierarchy handout #21 and understand that everyone must start at the lowest level and work up. No level can be skipped, so if the needs are not met from that level the child or adult is unable to move forward to the next level.

 

C. Read handout #22 and understand that many situations & problems are best handled with a referral to an expert. Do not overstep your boundaries.

Overview: How to create a clean and healthy environment for children and to manage medication. Read the pages on health & safety in "An Adult sized Guide to a Child sized Environment". Read over the same topic pages in the school-age companion guide. Read the licensing regulations on medications.
 

To Do:


A. Read STARS handout #24 and then #25. In your workbook, Highlight each area where hand washing SHOULD have taken place.

 

B. Read STARS handout #26 and understand how and when to sanitize or disinfect.

 

C. Complete the checklist on handout #27 about when to use either a weak (sanitize) or strong (disinfect) solution. Write out your answers.


 

D. Respond to the two scenarios on STARS handout #28 & #29 and explain in your words what would be the proper way to manage these situations.

 

E. Look at STARS handout #30 it is a sample of the record keeping form.

 

F. Read over the proper diaper changing procedure, STARS handout #31; so you are familiar with the expected process -just in case.

 

G. Now take 15-20 minutes to "surf" through the web resource listed at the "Study links" section. There is a wealth of information on children's health.

Overview: Learn proper food handling techniques and nutritious meal planning for children. Read over the Food Safety & Nutrition pages in An Adult-sized Guide to a Child-sized Environment". Read over the DSHS Licensing requirements. Fill out the check sheet on STARS handout #32.

A. Read over STARS handout #33, #34, & #35.


 

B. Respond in your own words to the food handling scenario from STARS handout #34.

 

C. Next read over STARS handout #36 and complete the 10 questions.

 

D. Using STARS handout #37 as a guide, type out a full days menu to be served at a child care facility for school age children.

Overview: Learn to identify child abuse & neglect and understand the process for reporting. - Review abuse & neglect section in "An Adult-sized Guide to a Child-sized Environment" .

 

TO DO:

A. In your workbook take the True/False quiz on STARS handout #40. Then write up a short summary of your answers. Complete handout #41.

 

B. In your workbook read and complete the 8 reporting questions on the STARS handout #42.

 

C. Next, in your workbook, complete the safety checklist on handout #43, do both pages.

 

D. Also in your workbook respond to Tyson's accident - STARS handout #44 by filling out the accident report form (STARS handout #45) and reporting the needed information onto the work sheet.


 

E. Complete the 7 questions using your ratings handout #46 and list "CPS" for each one that you feel should be reported.


 

F. STARS handout #47 is for your use to obtain local resources, it would be a good idea to fill this out can keep it where you can find it when needed.


 

G. Next, Take some time to go to the web resources listed on the "Study links"page. There is information on Child Abuse.

Overview: Child Care as a Profession.


To Do:

 

A. Take some time to visit all the web-site links that have been posted for you throughout the course; all of these sites are at the "Study links" page. Many of these sites have worlds of information that can be used now or stored for later. So bookmark as favorites any of these sites.

 

B. File all your notes and informational worksheets that you completed in the STARS workbook, save these for future reference.


 

C. Find a safe and accessible place at your child care facility for the state guidebooks.

 

D. Look through the web resource sites listed that have information on professional development and the child care field.

 

E. Next, write a short professional growth plan for yourself. List what classes & training you would like to take, list what readings you would like to do, and list any self-improvements you plan to accomplish.
