ASSIGNMENT #1

Please read the "STARS on the Internet" Behavior Strategies workbook. Before you begin to use any method of behavior modifications you need to objectively look at your program, your facility, and yourself.

The first area is the environment. Do you have wide open areas that are calling to the children to run...jump...or be overly active? Do you have too many play items out at the same time? This can over stimulate many young children. Do you have loud noisy play areas near quiet activities? This can cause children to become distracted with what they are doing. Objectively look at your classroom set up and area.

Next take a look at yourself. Do you provide smooth transitions from one activity to the next? Or are there long periods of "wait time" for the children while you set up or clean up? Most young children will become fussy or fidgety if they have to wait too long. Are your activities age appropriate for the level of your children? Many children will give up and  become disruptive if they are frustrated with an activity that they cannot do. Objectively take a step back and look at yourself.

And lastly, could any of the disruptive children have learning disabilities that interfere with their ability to listen and stay on task? Many attention disorders are noticed at a very young age. This is something that you cannot diagnose, only a professional can do that. But you can record your observations, and voice your concerns to the parents and center director or owner.

ASSIGNMENT #2

Read through the behavior modification strategies listed in the workbook. Read the following scenarios and explain how you would handle each situation and each child.

  1. BRENDA: She is a five year old in the preschool 4-5 program. Brenda is a very active and loud child. Today you watched her enter the block building area and start to take over the building of a tower. The other children did not want her to join in, so she knocks down the tower and says blocks are stupid!

  2. KATE: She is a four year old in the preschool 4-5 program. Kate is constantly coming up to the teacher to tattle on the other children. Today she runs up to you and yells "Suzie just pushed Peter" repeating this over and over very loudly.

  3. JOSH: He is almost two years old and is in the toddler care program. Josh throws temper tantrums almost everyday just before nap time. Today you pick him up to check his diaper, and he screams at you "No!" and throws himself on the floor and begins to scream and cry.

  4. DANNY: He is nine months old in the infant care program. Today you watch as he crawls around the room and over to Lyndie. He starts to crawl over her and then stops as he begins to bite her on the arm.
