To Do:
A. In the STARS Family system workbook read all the Washington state licensing
guidelines pages. Obtain a copy of your home or center child-care policies.
Check to see if your policies are up to date with these state guidelines.
For Idaho Child Care providers please just review.
B. Of the three following parent communication methods choose one and write a paragraph detailing how you would use this method for communication with your parents.
1. Bulletin Board
2. Newsletter
3. Parent Meetings/Conferences
C. After you have chosen one of the above topics, write another paragraph
on the same topic explaining:
1. What your home/center does now with this media.
2. How does this relate to the licensing guidelines?
3. What would you like to change or improve to promote better communication with the parents at your facility?
D. Once you have finished this report please go to the links listed at the “Study links” page for further information. Please allow 30-45 minutes of time for web surfing.

To Do:
A. Please read the next page from the STARS family workbook (one step at a time). Understand that Maslow's needs are a step at a time starting at the bottom. If the level is not fulfilled the person cannot progress to the next step. The psychological needs listing is there to help you become aware of how & why people react differently.
B. Fill out the care-sharing page in your workbook. Once you have finished read the back on Care for the Caregiver. These are good thoughts for anyone who is in a care giving occupation.
C. Universal Values are common among many families. Read over the list on the next page, and think about the families in your center/home.
D. The next page is about "Birth Order" and it's effect on the child's behavior. Many behaviors can be tracked to the birth order of the child. Please go to the web site listed in "Study links" for more information on Birth Order. If you would like to you can print out the test and take it to see the effect that Birth Order had on you.
E. Please answer the 7 "Suggestions for Enriching Families" on the
worksheet in your workbook. Then for assignment #2 write out your
answers/examples for each one of these suggestions. Also add in how each one
could be used to enhance the families at your center/home.
F. Now read the next two pages on the 6 traits and family traditions. This information can be worked into a parent newsletter or conference.

A. In the STARS Family Systems workbook please read the next section of pages dealing with communication. Fill out the worksheets: "Communication Skills Practice" & "Sharpen your Conflict Resolution Skills". The last page is a checklist that can be re-printed and used at parent meetings.
B. For assignment #3 you are to do some research at the websites listed at the “Study links” page. Please read each of the two following problems. After you have researched possible answers to the following questions write a short summary about each child.
1. In your toddler group there is one child, Joe, that is very aggressive toward the others. He hits, bites, and pushes the other children.

A. In the STARS Family Systems workbook please turn to the next set of pages on stress & discipline. Take the stress test, add up your score and subtract 20. Then look at the key at the bottom for your vulnerability to stress.
B. Read the next two pages dealing with tension & stress. On the next
page look over the list of symptoms related to stress. Highlight all that
apply to you. Understand that so many people are affected by stress! Many
times stress will even block your way to good behaviors.
C. Visit the websites at the "Study links" page and research what the normal development of a child at each of the following age groups should be. For assignment #4 please write a short summary about the average growth & development for each of the following age groups:
1. Infant (at age 6 month)
2. Toddler (at age 2 years)
3. Preschooler (at age 4 years)
4. School-Age (at age 8 years)

Systems workbook. These pages are resources that can be used to inform
parents individually, through newsletters, conferences or to hold an
informational parent night on any one of these topics.
B. Your Assignment #5 is to develop an overview of a parent project you
would like to do at your center or home care. Please use the Family Systems
Workbook information or any of the websites for background and ideas.
Take some time
now and visit all the listed websites. Then write up a summary of your
"Parent Project".
