ASSIGNMENT #1:

To Do:

A. In the STARS workbook please read the pages on Maslow's Hierarchy of needs.  

B. Look at the last section page and write out your definition of all 5 terms that are listed there.


C.  In your workbook review the 5 child scenarios listed on that page and state where, on Maslow's scale, do you feel  each of these children are functioning? And explain why?

To Do:

A. In the STARS workbook please read the next pages on Nutrition.  Be sure to look at the pages reviewing the 6 dietary guides, snacking, exercise, and the advertising media. The backsides are worksheets to use with your children. Copies can be made. Read the 3 pages on the food pyramid & serving sizes.

 

B. In your workbook take the pre-test on food labels. Then do the label logic on potatoes and answer the 4 questions in your workbook.  On the last "sugar and fiber" page use a few cereal boxes from home or ones that are used at work to compare these differences. Save these pages in your workbook for future reference.

 

C. Next; Go to the websites listed at the “Study links” section, to review ideas and information on children's eating habits. For Assignment #2 please write two quick summaries on two different nutrition topics of your choice. Find the information from the websites that are listed. Spend some time surfing all the websites.

To Do:

A. Next read all the craft, snack, and fun food pages in the STARS workbook. Please set aside one hour of time on a Saturday morning or just after school time and review the children's TV programming for the commercials. This is a real eye opener! Use page 35 “A closer look at Saturday Morning TV” and fill out the questions as you watch the programs. This will make for a wonderful "Food" discussion with your class on Monday.

 

B.  Write out two fun & healthy snacks that you can come up with from the wacky snack recipe pages. Be creative and and have fun with it.

 

C. Please go back to your class and prepare a "food" theme project. This could be a snack preparation, a science project with sprouts, an art project with food pictures, or a vegetable tasting party!

A. In your workbook please read the next pages on food safety. Also be sure to read and review through the Health and Food Safety websites at the "Study links" page.


 

B. Please read over the next few pages on food allergies & chocking. Be sure your job site is aware of these dangers.

 

C. Next read the yahoo health article on disease prevention and read the information on Hand washing & Sanitizing.

 

Now after you have completed the readings listed above: For Assignment #4 answer the following three questions:

 

1. What is the danger zone? And why is it important to know this when handling food?


 

2. Why is it important to understand proper hand washing? And when should hands be washed?


 

3. What is the difference between Sanitizing & Disinfecting? Give examples of when you would use each one?

A. Please read completely all of the remaining pages in your workbook. Review the process for reading a child's temperature. Be sure you know what the process is at your work site for detecting ill children.

 

B. Review the immunization information. Especially, understand the recommended schedule for children in Washington State.

 

C. Review the car seat safety guides and learn where your job site first aid supplies are kept. Read the last 3 pages on accidents, injuries, and prevention. 

 

For assignment #5 answer the following 4 review questions, you may use your workbook:

 

1. Why would you want to take a child's temperature? Which method is best?

 

2. What would you tell a parent that says immunization shots are not needed for their child?

 

3. How can you child-proof an indoor toddler play area?

 

4. Why is it unsafe to microwave baby bottles?


 

Take some time now and visit all the listed websites. You may bookmark to favorites on your computer any sites that are of interest to you.

 

As your last assignment you are to evaluate this course. Please use the 1-4 ratings (1 being -strongly disagree, and 4 being -strongly agree) for each of the following questions:
