Please read the first two sections pages 3-6. Recap in your own words what makes up a good learning environment? What can be added to enhance learning in your classroom setting?

Read pages 7-16 in the "Teaching our Youngest" book. Please write out your answers to the following questions:

  1. Why is reading aloud important?
  2. How can reading be made enjoyable?
  3. What should be done to help children learn as you read to them?
  4. Why should you talk about the book that you are reading?
  5. What types of books are best for children?
  6. Should you re-read the same book over again? Why or why not?
  7. How can reading be used to develop listening & speaking skills?
  8. Why are rhymes or repeated patterns important for children to learn?

  1. Read pages 17-27 in the "Teaching our Youngest" book. Please summarize in your own words the importance of teaching children about print, books, and letters. Next write another short paragraph about background knowledge and the thinking skills that children need to understand books and stories. Explain how numbers and counting are related to reading skills.

Read pages 29-35 in the "Teaching our Youngest" book. Please develop a plan for checking the pre-reading progress of the children in your care. Also come up with some ideas on passing this information on to the parents of the children in your care.

Now in your own words summarize your plans for incorporating these pre-reading skills into your present program.
